Do I need an eSIM in Japan?

You need data in Japan. You do not need data for the tap at the ticket gate.
Suica is not your internet
Once a Suica is in Apple Wallet, tapping gates does not need mobile data. Express Mode talks to the reader over NFC. Issuing the card and topping up through Apple Pay needs a network.
JR East Welcome Suica Mobile (as of March 2026): iPhone / Apple Pay, valid 180 days from issue, remaining balance is not refunded. Most phones sold outside Japan lack FeliCa, so they need a physical card.
